Swissport awarded passenger assistance concession for eight Spanish airports
Madrid/Zurich, 16 July 2010 – Spain’s state airport operator AENA has awarded Swissport International, the world’s leading provider of ground handling services to the aviation sector, a concession to provide care and assistance at eight Spanish airports for travellers with restricted mobility. The two-year concession enters into effect at the end of July.
Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA), Spain’s state-owned airport operating company, which is responsible for all 47 of the country’s airports, has issued a two-year concession to provide ground services for passenger with restricted mobility (PRM). The concession has been awarded to a consortium consisting of Swissport International, Ferrovial Servicios and Menzies Aviation.
The services specified under the new concession include escorting and assisting travellers with disabilities and unaccompanied minors from their arrival at the airport to the aircraft, or from the arrival of their flight until they are met in the arrivals hall.
From the end of July onwards, these services will be provided exclusively by Swissport International and Menzies Aviation at Barcelona El Prat, Alicante and Lanzarote airports, and by Swissport International and Ferrovial Servicios at Bilbao, Gerona, Malaga, Tenerife South and Tenerife North. The consortium will be the largest PRM provider in Spain: about half a million travellers with restricted mobility a year pass through the eight airports concerned. With this concession Swissport International becomes the leading provider of services for PRM’s in Europe.
Swissport International and Menzies Aviation are already involved in a successful collaboration in Spain on the ground handling front. The partners have now concluded joint-venture agreements with Ferrovial Servicios for the new services planned.
Swissport International Ltd., which is owned by Spanish-based Ferrovial, one of the world’s leading infrastructure and service corporations, provides ground services for over 70 million passengers and 2.8 million tonnes of cargo a year on behalf of some 650 client companies. With its workforce of around 32 000 personnel, Swissport is active at 176 airports in 38 countries on five continents, and generated consolidated operating revenue of CHF 1.7 billion (EUR 1.2 billion or USD 1.6 billion) last year.
