Swissport inaugurated a brand-new four-story office building at its Brussels air cargo facility. This opening is the latest milestone in the large-scale refurbishment of Swissport’s Brussels cargo complex which started in January 2019 and includes 25,000 sqm of warehouse space and a state-of-the-art Pharma Center.
Frank Mena, Head of the North America region of Swissport, also assumes responsibility for Latin America and serves as new Head of The Americas.
Swissport International AG has appointed Warwick Brady as President & CEO. He will succeed Christoph Mueller, who has been acting as the interim CEO since 1 January 2021. Christoph Mueller will become Chairman of the Board of Directors once Warwick Brady assumes the CEO role in Spring 2021.
Swissport in the UK has won a major cargo handling contract from the Lufthansa Group for London Heathrow Airport. With this win, the global leader in ground services and cargo handling now handles the German airline group’s cargo at all of its UK destinations.
In 2020, due to the global market collapse in the wake of Covid-19, Swissport served only some 82 million airline passengers (68.9 percent fewer than in 2019) and handled roughly 1.7 million flights (minus 59.0 percent versus prior year). The company handled 4.1 million tons of cargo at 115 airport cargo warehouses.
Swissport will be serving Air France-KLM Group in Saudi Arabia until 2025. The new contract expands the existing cooperation to all flights of all airlines of the French-Dutch airline group, including freighter services, to and from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Starting tomorrow, 7 January 2021, Swissport subsidiary Checkport Schweiz AG will be operating a PCR testing facility at Zurich Airport. The novelty: Enders Diagnostics’ PCR tests are carried out by saliva sample and not by nasal swab and the test result is available within only 5 hours, instead of 24 to 48 hours as with previous PCR tests.
Swissport has successfully completed its comprehensive financial restructuring. As part of a debt-for-equity swap, ownership of the company has been transferred from HNA Group to a group of financial investors led by the former senior secured lenders of Swissport. The new owners will appoint Christoph Mueller as future Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Swissport has been awarded a major long-term contract by the Lufthansa Group for Switzerland. The new contract secures significant business volumes. It covers passenger services and airport ramp handling for Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines and Edelweiss Air at the airports in Zurich, Geneva and Basel.
Swissport has been appointed by Qantas as its preferred partner for ground services at Australia’s busiest airports in Sydney and Melbourne, as well as Canberra Airport, which serves the nation’s capital. The 5-year agreement was reached after a rigorous tender process and will cover up to 70,000 flights per year.
