Optimizing airline operations with Swissport’s Central Load Control (CLC)

Swissport’s Central Load Control (CLC) service optimizes airline load control by centralizing weight and balance calculations. This enhances efficiency, reduces costs, and ensures high-quality service across its global network. With two CLC centers in Morocco and Kenya, Swissport supports over 50 airlines, processing more than 170,000 load sheets annually. Philipp Mueller, VP Global Operations Ground Handling & Fueling at Swissport, shares insights on the benefits, operations, and future of load control technology.

Philipp, what is Central Load Control (CLC) and how does it benefit airlines?

CLC ensures the safe and efficient distribution of aircraft load (baggage, cargo, mail, and passengers) before takeoff. Our specialists create load sheets for 50 airlines, including critical data on weight and balance to optimize flight performance and assure a safe flight. With two centers in Casablanca and Nairobi, our specialists process more than 170,000 load sheets annually. Centralized operations enhance efficiency, quality, cost savings, and environmental sustainability while ensuring seamless communication across multiple airports.

What are the key advantages of Swissport’s CLC versus local load control?

Historically, load sheets have been produced locally at airports. However, this did  happen at an office at the airport, not one of our colleagues sitting next to the flight crew. With that in mind and the latest technology in communications, this has opened a lot of options to have this service centralized as it basically doesn’t matter whether the load sheet is produced 1 mile or 5000 miles away. Due to synergies in airline systems, flight schedules and no physical ways from an office to an aircraft, our colleagues in our CLC offices can produce several times more load sheets per shift than a colleague locally. All this in a supervised environment where any support is immediately available. Given the shortage of qualified person in many countries around the globe, we do not face this problem at our CLC locations. The quality they provide is impeccable. This affects also the adherence to short turnaround times. Airlines save costs through optimized workflows and reduced fuel consumption.

How does CLC integrate with airline systems and communicate with pilots?

Swissport’s CLC integrates seamlessly with multiple airline-specific systems. We currently operate six different systems, with more to come. Should communication not happen via one of the six systems, we have developed our own Swissport CLC application for smooth station-CLC-station communication. Pilots typically receive the relevant data via ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System), or if unavailable, ground staff print and deliver the information before departure.

How does Swissport’s CLC ensure high-quality service?

We maintain high standards through expert staff, 24/7 supervision, and triple ISO certification for all our locations globally (ISO 9001 for quality, ISO 14001 for environment, and ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety). Our low staff turnover ensures experienced teams and consistent quality. Swissport’s CLC has an outstanding performance record, with fewer than two delays per 10,000 departures.

Why does Swissport operate two CLC centers?

Operating two centers ensures business continuity and risk distribution. If one center experiences disruptions, the other takes over, minimizing or even preventing delays. It also enables recruitment from diverse regions, ensuring access to top talent. Both centers complement each other operationally, maintaining uninterrupted service for our airline partners. Not coincidentally, we are offering ground handling services in both cities, allowing us to attract internal talent with operational experience on top.

Is there any operational difference between the two locations?

No, both centers follow standardized processes outlined in the Swissport Ground Operations Manual. Airlines receive the same high-quality, reliable 24/7 service, whether managed from Casablanca or Nairobi.

What’s next for Swissport’s CLC operations?

We continuously improve efficiency through advanced technology and process enhancements. Expanding our global reach is a key goal, supporting more airlines and our own stations worldwide. Sustainability remains a priority, with ongoing efforts to reduce fuel usage and paper consumption. Swissport’s CLC is committed to setting the benchmark for excellence in the industry.
