Biodiversity and Ecosystems

At the airports we serve, our operations are often located close to areas of biodiversity, which can impact the surrounding ecosystems. In accordance with our commitment to responsible airport operations, we adhere to all policies and procedures set by the airports.

We work closely with airports and follow their policies and procedures to protect nearby sensitive environments. Our Global Environmental Manual outlines procedures to prevent pollution from fuel spills and de-icing/anti-icing activities (see below). We also have procedures in place for economic water consumption and controlling effluent discharge into groundwater, water sources, or a city’s sewage system. Additionally, we consider our impact on forests and wildlife, recognizing that trees and hedgerows around our stations
provide crucial habitats for wildlife and are often protected by local laws.

We have implemented specific measures to mitigate the risk from invasive species. For our cargo operations, we procure wooden pallets that meet ISPM 15 standards, ensuring no pests are transported via international flights. Additionally, we adhere strictly to international flight waste management protocols, processing cabin waste separately from domestic waste to minimize the impact on local ecosystems.

PREVENTION OF FUEL SPILLAGE

Swissport is dedicated to providing fueling services while ensuring environmental protection by preventing fuel spills. To mitigate the risk of spills contaminating stormwater or nearby waterways, Swissport has implemented strict policies, such as the QHSE Policy Statement and Global Environmental Manual, integrated into employee training and daily operations. Site-specific measures, like spill containment systems and drainage separation, have been established in locations in Canada to prevent groundwater contamination.

Mitigating our IMPACT

DE-ICING AND ANTI-ICING

Swissport uses de-icing and anti-icing fluids made of water and food-grade glycol to remove or prevent ice on aircraft, as glycol lowers the freezing point of water. While not directly harmful, improper disposal of glycol can damage aquatic ecosystems due to its oxygen dependency for decomposition. Swissport adheres to airport policies by utilizing centralized de-icing pads and specialized glycol recovery vehicles to minimize environmental impact.
