Swissport featured in Air Cargo Week: Optimizing cargo operations at JFK

Swissport is proud to be featured on the front page of Air Cargo Week (8 September 2025 edition), which highlights our role in optimizing cargo operations at New York JFK, one of the busiest transatlantic gateways.

The article explores how ground handlers are adapting to rising e-commerce volumes, strict regulatory requirements, and growing demand for temperature-sensitive cargo—showcasing Swissport’s expertise, ability to deliver at scale, and long-standing airline partnerships.

“E-commerce isn’t just more freight—it’s more individual pieces,” explains Ajay Barolia, EVP Cargo North America at Swissport. “At JFK, CargoSpot gives piece-level control and real-time visibility, while optimised layouts, dedicated processing zones and flexible staffing keep the pace up. Integrated weighing and mobile processing let us capture data instantly, which is vital with varied dimensions. Automated status updates keep customers in the loop.”

For Asian carriers such as Korean Air, Swissport tailors operations to high-volume, piece-heavy shipments. “You get excellent accuracy, real-time status and clean integration with airline systems, so visibility is complete from offload to warehouse release,” Barolia adds. “Add tailored ramp and warehouse workflows and you’ve got the precision, flexibility and speed international operators are after.”

Behind these operations is a highly trained workforce. At JFK, Swissport teams combine deep operational expertise with ongoing training to ensure safety, precision, and service quality—whether managing complex pharma shipments or high-volume e-commerce flows.

Swissport is also investing in the future of sustainable cargo handling. We will be the first handler at JFK to operate an all-electric GSE fleet for all freighter operations from warehouse to ramp. Working closely with the Port Authority, we are building robust charging infrastructure to reduce emissions and power cleaner, more efficient operations.

This recognition underlines Swissport’s role as a trusted industry partner, anticipating challenges, scaling innovation, and delivering customer value at the heart of global trade.
