China cargo operations

From specialized cold chain solutions to AI-powered automation, our flagship Shanghai Pudong facility connects pharmaceuticals, perishables, and e-commerce shipments from China to global markets with unmatched speed, precision, and reliability, bringing the world seamlessly into China’s dynamic economy.

Swissport manages and jointly operates the groundbreaking Digital & Intelligent International Cargo Terminal at Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) in partnership with Smargo, a joint venture between AVINEX Logistics and China Eastern Airlines Logistics.

This 222,000-square-meter flagship facility represents Swissport’s strategic entry into China and serves as the cornerstone of our Asia-Pacific cargo operations. Designed to handle between 600,000 and 1.2 million tons annually, it connects Chinese exporters and international businesses with Swissport’s global network of 117 cargo centers worldwide.

At Shanghai Pudong, Swissport combines next-generation automation, specialized cold chain capabilities, and e-commerce expertise, setting new standards for cargo handling in Asia and enabling faster, safer, and more reliable shipments across the globe.

Advanced cold chain solutions

The Shanghai facility addresses critical gaps in Asia’s pharmaceutical and perishables logistics. With 15,000 square meters of temperature-controlled space, including a 200-square-meter ultra-deep freeze chamber, we can store 1,500 tons of temperature-sensitive cargo with precise stability across multiple zones.

From next-generation pharmaceuticals and biomedical shipments to seafood, meat, and fresh produce, our dedicated cool rooms, workflows, and trained staff guarantee cargo arrives in perfect condition. This supports airlines, manufacturers, and customers in Asia’s rapidly growing pharmaceutical and perishables markets.

Ai-powered innovation

Shanghai Pudong exemplifies Swissport’s leadership in digitalization and automation. 94 autonomous vehicles coordinate seamlessly with automated storage and retrieval systems, while the AI-driven warehouse management system achieves 99.5% scheduling accuracy, continuously optimizing equipment allocation and resource scheduling.

Automated security screening with AI adjudication, intelligent complaint management with full video documentation, and integrated weighing systems ensure faster turnaround, fewer errors, and complete traceability. Whether handling freighters, high-volume e-commerce, or specialty cargo,

Global e-commerce integration

Swissport’s Shanghai Pudong facility serves as a key gateway for cross-border e-commerce, linking Chinese exporters to our global network of specialized hubs, including Liège, Milan, Basel, and New York JFK. Four high-speed sorting systems handle 3,500 parcels per hour, triple the throughput of conventional terminals, enabling up to 40% faster delivery of Chinese exports to global markets.

By combining advanced automation, AI optimization, and real-time tracking, the facility provides end-to-end visibility and control, giving carriers and merchants confidence in timely delivery and accurate handling of high-volume shipments.

Precision, reliability, and scale

Swissport delivers consistent, world-class service through standardized procedures, service level agreements, and continuous monitoring. We support IATA OneRecord-compliant data standards along with ATC AFTN, SITA, and TUMS message transmission.

The facility’s intelligent operating system cuts manual intervention, reduces errors, and speeds up throughput. From e-commerce parcels to temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals, our trained teams ensure accuracy, compliance, and timely handling—reinforcing Shanghai Pudong as a premier gateway in Asia.

Built on safety

At Swissport, safety and compliance form the foundation of our Shanghai operations. We are the only major airport services provider globally to hold triple ISO certifications for quality (9001), environment (14001), and health & safety (45001), standards we apply rigorously at our Pudong facility. Our operations strictly adhere to Chinese aviation regulations, customs requirements, and international airline-specific standards, ensuring every shipment is handled safely and reliably.

Through continuous staff training, strict SOPs, and advanced monitoring systems that oversee everything from dangerous goods storage to high-security strong rooms, we provide operational reliability while safeguarding people and products.

Sustainably smart

We integrate sustainability across every operation in Shanghai. A 26,000 m² rooftop photovoltaic system generates 7.12 GWh annually, cutting 6,846 tons of carbon emissions. Green building certification, electric trailers and refrigerated trucks, and a digital carbon management system ensure full visibility and continuous improvement.

Our holistic approach combines renewable energy, electrification, and green services, delivering operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact.
