Mitigating our impact
As part of our commitment to improve our environmental programs and to ensure compliance with ISO 14001:2015, we are currently refining our environmental management system. Having the new system in place will enable us to improve our internal and external reporting, and significantly increase our contribution to environmental management at the airports we serve.
Fuel efficiency and emissions
Reducing our carbon footprint
The operation of ground support equipment (GSE) is a major activity at Swissport. For years, we’ve been deploying electrically powered and hybrid GSE (eGSE) wherever possible. Introducing eGSE not only improves the direct working environment of our employees, decreases exhaust emissions and reduces our carbon footprint, it also leads to significant fuel cost savings. Our goal is to increase this share to at least 50 percent by 2025.
DE-ICING / Anti-icing
For the de-icing of aircraft, large quantities of glycol are typically used. Although even pure glycol has a very low toxicity and rapidly breaks down within weeks in soil and water, Swissport continues to optimize the use of this substance. To keep the required amount of glycol to a minimum, we frequently mix it with biodegradable carbon-based de-icing agents. The use of this type of glycol mix, however, depends on national laws and local regulations.
FUELING
Swissport is committed to providing into-plane and GSE fueling and fuel storage in an environmentally friendly manner. It is our duty and our aim to prevent fuel releases – our key environmental concern in this field of our operations. We have implemented various environmental policies and procedures which are an integral part of our training and daily operations.
We report and investigate every incident. In the case of a major fuel release and depending on the type of material, an emergency plan will be activated. This plan is managed in line with local airport emergency plans.
